SADE Talks about selected tracks from ‘Soldier Of Love’:

Writing and recording for me is a layering process, with a lot of subtraction, a lot of chipping away. To me a song is like a sculpture. What's finally left is what it is. I never do covers because I'm not a good enough interpretive singer. I don't have the technical spectrum to render a great song, if it was done well in the first place. The point for me is to deliver a story or a feeling that doesn't already exist.

THE MOON AND THE SKY: Stuart brought the basic backing track in with the intro and chorus already established. Though we worked on the verses and bridge together I found it really hard establishing the chorus line over a part already written as it was a bit like karaoke without the words. I found it harder than starting from scratch. Most of our songs are built in the studio. This is about not being appreciated, about somebody pretending to let somebody go but not really letting them go. It's about realising you can never go back.

SOLDIER OF LOVE: I don't see this as a love song. It's about looking for life and faith I think. Someone said to me recently you often sing from a man's point of view, which is what I do here. When I visualise struggle I often see it as like a wild west scene or battleground. It is a very masculine thing, connected to all the westerns I watched as a child! It took a long time to get this song right, with all the layers and spaces.

BABYFATHER: This is about how great it is to be a parent and what a great honour and privilege that is, and what a terrible thing that is to waste. As long as you feel good about yourself, you can be a good parent and then it becomes an endless fruitful cycle. I wanted this to sound quite rough and scrappy, not too honed. The beginning feels like the icecream van coming down the street.

LONG HARD ROAD: This was written on my birthday 5 years ago when I was working at home in London. I always consider making a record as a vague possibility, I'm always writing lyrics in my head though i don't always write them down. The band were keen to get involved but I didn't want the pressure of everybody flying in. So I started working with a couple of guys – an Argentinian guitarist and an engineer – in my basement. I wanted to write and just enjoy it, whenever it was convenient. The rest were written over the past 2 years, mainly at Real World studios.

THE SAFEST PLACE: is about the idea that you won't be let down but everybody finds their own way through my songs. They have their own reason for being but you can listen to them the way you want. That is so important.

“Soldier Of Love” é o nome do tão aguardado novo álbum (e single de avanço) de Sade, e que chega às lojas a 8 de Fevereiro.
O tema título “Soldier Of Love” que Sade co-produziu com Mike Pela, foi escrito por Sade juntamente com os colaboradores de longa data Andrew Hale, Stuart Matthewman e Paul Spencer Denman. A faixa tem uma batida pulsante e dinâmica, com uma parte vocal assombrosa, à qual Sade já nos habituou, dando assim início à contagem decrescente para SOLDIER OF LOVE. Gravado em Inglaterra e com lançamento mundial previsto para 8 de Fevereiro de 2010, SOLDIER OF LOVE é o primeiro álbum de estúdio de Sade desde o lançamento do multiplatinado ‘Lovers Rock’, em 2000.
Conhecida pelo som intemporal e único, Sade gozou de um sucesso fenomenal a nível mundial, durante um período de vinte e cinco anos de carreira. Desde o lançamento do álbum de estreia ‘Diamond Life’, em 1984, a banda viu todos os seus cinco álbuns de estúdio alcançar o Top 10 da Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, vendendo mundialmente um total de mais de 50 milhões de álbuns até à data. Nomeada para os American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards e tendo ganho três Grammy Awards – o primeiro em 1986 para Best New Artist, depois em 1994 para Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group com “No Ordinary Love”, e novamente em 2002 para Best Pop Vocal Album com ‘Lovers Rock’.

Soldier of Love é apenas o sexto álbum de estúdio que a banda de Sade lança durante a sua carreira de 25 anos, sendo também o primeiro após Lover's Rock (2000). Para a própria cantora, o elemento central que reúne o esforço de composição da banda, trata-se apenas de uma questão de integridade e autenticidade. “Só gravo discos quando sinto que tenho algo para dizer. Não estou interessada em editar apenas com o objectivo de vender algo. Sade não é uma marca”.
O chamamento para a banda se reunir surgiu em 2008, no estúdio Real World de Peter Gabriel, próximo da casa de Sade, localizada na região rural do sudoeste de Inglaterra. Foi a primeira vez que os quatro elementos da banda se juntaram desde a digressão Lover's Rock que terminou em 2001. O baixista Paul Denman viajou de Los Angeles, onde se encontrava a desempenhar o papel de manager da banda punk do seu filho, os Orange. O guitarrista e saxofonista Stuart Matthewman interrompeu o seu trabalho em Nova Iorque para uma banda sonora de um filme, e o teclista Andrew Hale deixou o seu trabalho como consultor de A&R (Artistas e Repertório).
Numa série de sessões quinzenais no estúdio Real World, Sade reuniu o material necessário para um novo álbum, relativamente ao qual todos os elementos da banda sentiram ser, provavelmente, o seu disco mais ambicioso até à data. Em particular, a parte sonora e as batidas marciais do tema título, Soldier Of Love, soavam bastante diferentes do seu repertório anterior. Segundo Andrew Hale: “A grande questão para todos nós no início era: será que ainda queremos fazer isto e será que ainda nos iríamos dar bem como amigos?” A resposta logo surgiu sob a forma de uma certeza apaixonada.
O álbum foi terminado no Verão de 2009, gravado na sua maioria no estúdio Real World. Desta vez, o sentimento presente na música tinha passado da soul da “velha guarda” em Lover's Rock e assumiu uma identidade mais ecléctica. Por vezes, a banda apresentava o som típico de Sade, com o saxofone de Matthewman em “In Another Time” e a parte vocal no tema Long Hard Road hymning. Mas com temas como a faixa reggae alegre e peculiar, Babyfather, e o tema de abertura do disco, com arranjos dramáticos, The Moon and the Sky, a banda estava a explorar um novo território. “Nunca quis repetir-me”, afirma a cantora. “E isso torna-se um desafio mais interessante para a banda, à medida que vamos seguindo o nosso percurso”.
